Until the middle of the seventeenth century, people normally stored sugar stored in boxes and then, subsequently, in the more recognisable sugar bowl we know today. However, during the latter part of that century, sugar was becoming more widely available and people used it as an ingredient in many foods. Additionally, people used it as a condiment and shook it over foods in order to sweeten them. As a result of this new idea, castors specifically designed for sugar were produced in England.
Early examples of silver sugar castors can be rare and are highly sought after, and similarly, those of unusual designs or in their original sets are also popular.
