English antique sterling silver snuff box with a glorious inscription to the inside of lid.

It is only partially hallmarked, lion passant and the date letter 2 of London 1820 to the inside of the lid, for what ever reason the base has not been marked so possibly an assay office oversight.

The gilt remains intact to the inside with just minor scuffs to the gilt on the base, the inscription reads ‘ Presented to Captn Robt Eilley as a token of esteem by the passengers on board the ship BROTHERS from London to Australia Feby 16th 1850’.

3 or 4 small dinks all of which are very minor, measures86x52x18mm..

The barque Brothers was 390 tonn, she arrived in Australia on the 13th of Feb 1850 having set sail from London on the 14th October 1849 before then stopping at Plymouth and setting sail again on the 26th of October 1849 bound for Australia.

A wonderful piece of maritime history.
