Menu and place card holders were originally used to hold either the list of food on offer or the name of the person to whom the seat at the table belonged. the menu holders could obviously be placed at strategic points on the dining table, while name cards were seat individual place setting.
Many menu and place holders were introduced during Victorian times, but became especially popular during the Edwardian era. King Edward’s influence on the design of menu and place holders is evident in that his love of hunting and fishing meant that these themes became especially popular.
Other popular styles were family crests or floral or rural motifs.
Antique silver menu and place holders are still a stylish addition to any table and can take pride of place at any dinner occasion.
