Sheffield is renowned for producing silver cutlery and tableware.

The Sheffield Assay Office is one of the four assay offices in the United Kingdom. It is located in Sheffield’s Guardian Hall. In 18th century Sheffield the silver trade was hampered by the legal requirement that items of solid silver must be assayed and the nearest Assay Offices were in Chester or London.

Therefore, a number of Sheffield’s silversmiths petitioned Parliament to establish of an Assay Office in their own city. London silversmiths opposed the petition but, despite this, the Government granted Sheffield, the right to assay silver in March 1773.

Fork comes from the Latin furca or pitchfork. The fork is a utensil now often made of stainless steel but previously of silver. Simply described, the long handle terminates in a head that branches into several narrow and often slightly curved tines with which one spears food.
