In Western culture, cutlery generally includes any hand implement used in preparing, serving and especially eating food. A person who makes or sells cutlery is called a cutler. The city of Sheffield in England has been famous for producing cutlery since the 17th century. However, other countries, such as the USA, have their own cutlery manufacturing traditions. Cutlery is more commonly called silverware or flatware in the USA, where cutlery generally only refers to knives and related cutting instruments. In contrast, the major items of cutlery in other Western cultures are the knife, fork and spoon.
