The earliest known comb (the predecessor of the hairbrush), was made from animal bone and found in Syria dates from 8000 BC, consequently, combs are among the oldest tools found by archaeologists.

Paint brushes, which may have been used as long as two million years ago, were later adapted to be used for hair. For example, Egyptian tombs have been found to contain such brushes.  In addition, evidence from paintings and sculptures show that Romans, Ancient Greeks and Egyptians not only styled, but carefully curled, designed and braided their hair, suggesting they used some form of hairbrush.

Subsequently, in the 16th century England, a businessman called William Kent started manufacturing hairbrushes.

However, hairbrushes became established in society and it was a short step to creating their handles and heads from silver. As a result there are many examples of highly decorative, excellent quality, antique silver hairbrushes available today.
