Antique mirrors were commonly produced by coating glass with silver, gold, or, more recently, chrome. Some, notably Venetian antique mirrors were coated with tin and mercury.
Some of the first mirror-like objects, for instance, were discovered in Anatolia (now Turkey) and they are thought to be around 8,000 years old. Certainly, they were created by highly polishing stones to create a reflective surface. In addition, other ancients used polished metal to the same effect. Metal-backed glass mirrors were though to be first produced in ancient Rome nearly 2,000 years ago.
With the introduction of glass blowing, mirrors became more popular, although still expensive and, thus, usually only used by the wealthy classes. When silver-backed glass mirrors were developed allowing mass production, consequently they became more common in less wealthy, middle class homes.
Furthermore, modern glass manufacture has almost eliminated bubbles and other impurities found in older mirrors. As a result, bubbles or other imperfections can indicate that a mirror is antique. In conclusion, however, it should be noted that isn’t always a guarantee that this is the case.
