This item is a silver Caddy Spoon, Thomas Wilkes Barker, London 1811.
Excellent clear hallmarks on this fine example.
Measures 67 mm in length with the bowl measuring 42 mm across.
Terminal engraved with the letter ‘A’.
Compared to other spoons, caddy spoons have shorter handles and shallower bowls. The spoon handle is shorter and, as a result, the spoon can be stored with the tea in a tea caddy. The shallow bowl is to accurately measure out the right amount of tea leaves.
Caddy spoons often feature detailing and naturalistic engraving such as that favoured during the regency period when tea was imported in huge quantities for well to do families.
