Nurses often wore a belt as part of their uniform and it was usual for nurses to have a buckle once they qualified. Families of newly-qualified nurses would often purchase a buckle as a congratulatory present.
Therefore, a nurse’s buckle is the traditional graduation gift for qualifying nurses. In most cases, a nurse’s buckle is made from silver and usually comes with a presentation case.
However, some hospitals had their own buckle design that would be issued as part of a nurse’s uniform. In this case, obviously the family could not present the buckle to their daughter.
