Candles have been in use since the times of the Ancient Egyptians and could date back as early as 3000 BC.  However, the earliest candlestick is known to be a clay candleholder dating back to only 400 BC.

Early English silver candlesticks were likely to be made from hammered silver but by the late 17th century, technology had advanced to allow the casting of silver candlesticks. Casting became the principal method of manufacture until the late 18th century when stamping candlesticks from sheet metal became more common.

Initially functional, so that early examples are often worn, with the advent of more modern forms of lighting, candlesticks became less popular.  Later pieces can more readily be found  in very good order.  As a result, the designs became more elaborate.  Additionally, with the advent of sheet metal stamping, a layer of silver could be wrapped around a less expensive material to produce a more affordable item.
