English antique sterling silver folding fruit knife with decorative mother of pearl handle featuring a bird sitting astride a haystack, may be a family crest but we have not identified it, may just be a decoration that once had significance but if that is the case I do not know or have heard of any such story?

Hallmarked from Sheffield in 1825 with the makers mark being that of Aaron Hatfield & Sons.
On first glances this one is a super knife but on closer inspection it does come with faults, the knife does not stand up when closed , as in on its spine, looking closely here there is a brass area where mother of pearl is fitted onto, this is protruding slightly making it impossible to stand correctly, also a rivet is missing so we would assume this knife has been taken apart at some point to sort something, there is also a couple of small nibbles to the mother of pearl, On the plain side there are 4 rivets (well 3 as one is just a hole) one of the centre ones has a small light hairline on it, we would say that this rivet is not original and whoever was doing a repair would probably be the one who caused this hairline whilst assembling .
The blade is in excellent order and the knife opens and closes well with just slight spring back of the blade in the closed position.
It may well have imperfections but with its decoration it is still very much worth consideration for every day use or for a collection as best side up laying flat it certainly looks the part.
Measures 149mm when opened and 83mm when closed.
