Antique Irish sterling silver buckle of “shuttle” shape by Law & Bayly dating to c.1790 maybe slightly earlier.
A good looking piece but there would appear to be some modifications, the pin is single which would not have been the case on an Irish buckle of this period and also a bit to long, the chape (revolving unit) is a later replacement , From the slight flattening of the curve of the buckle at the ends , it is likely that this buckle was adapted for use as a sash or belt buckle after shoe buckles became unfashionable.
An interesting and piece which measures 87x55mm.
