A dessert spoon is a spoon designed, as its name suggests, specifically for eating dessert. It is also sometimes used for soup or cereals and is similar in size to a soup spoon; with a capacity somewhere between a teaspoon and a tablespoon – it typically has a capacity around twice that of a teaspoon. The main difference between soup and dessert spoons is that dessert spoons have an oval, rather than round bowl.
In most traditional table settings, the dessert spoon is placed above the plate or bowl and thereby separated from the rest of the cutlery or, alternatively, it may accompany the dessert when that is brought to the table.
As a unit of culinary measure, a level dessertspoon is equals to two teaspoons. In the UK this is roughly 10 ml.
Apothecaries historically used dessert spoons as a measure of liquid that was equal to two fluid drams or one quarter of a fluid ounce.
