Antique Scottish Silver LUGGIE, Edinburgh 1872, Rare Item

Very rare antique Scottish sterling silver luggie, hallmarked from Edinburgh in 1872, we think the maker may well be that of James Rettie & Son of Aberdeen.

These were originally made from wood and this has been made to give it that wooden look with the vertical sections replicating the look of a coopered barrel, silver then silver gilt sections.

Of the very finest quality and in excellent condition and of very good weight.

To top of the handle it measures 150mm and measures 103mm across the rim.

Differing theories can be found on the internet as to the actual use of such a vessel, our understanding is that these were used for the eating of porridge and such a handle made it easily grasped by a small child who would have eaten there porridge with a horn spoon.

Very rare to find one in silver and most probably a piece specially commissioned by a wealthy person or someone of considerable note.
